Lester E. Bassett

Lester Eugene Bassett, 75, died following a long battle with multiple myeloma on Thursday, Aug. 21, in his Woodland, Calif., home.
Born Feb. 21, 1928, in South Bend, Ind., Mr. Bassett had been a Yolo County, Calif. resident for 27 years. He graduated from Riley High School in the same town in 1945. He then served the Merchant Marines for two years. He married Barbara Phelps on New Year?s Eve in 1947.
He worked for the Bendix Corporation and Studebaker in South Bend, Lockheed Missiles and Space in Sunnyvale, Calif., Nowel J. Brown Manufacturing in Campbell, Calif., Stage Coach Realty in Ukiah, Calif., and Bassett Real Estate in Woodland. He was a member of the Lions Club in Ukiah, and was a volunteer fireman for the Centre Township, Ind., fire department. He was a licensed pilot. He attended Holy Rosary Church as well as New Testament Church in Woodland.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Phelps) Bassett; sons, Randy Bassett and wife, Debbie of Cupertino, Calif., Craig Bassett and wife, Norman of Woodland, and Terry Bassett and wife, Kathleen, also of Woodland; and grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Stephen, Casey and Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kelly; his father, Monroe Bassett; his mother, Helen Bartolo; and by a brother, Jim Bassett.
The family requests that memorials be made to Shriners Hospital of Sacramento, Calif., or to the charity of donor?s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of McNary?s Chapel of Woodland.
Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Woodland Cemetery on West Street, with Father John E. Boll of Holy Rosary Church officiating.
