Edward L. Bassett Sr.
ATHOL - Edward L. Bassett Sr., 72, of 297 Moore Hill Road died yesterday in
Athol Memorial Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his wife, Anita M. (Miarecki) Bassett; four sons, Stanley F.
Miarecki of Orange, Edward L. Bassett Jr. of Phillipston, Theodore Bassett of
Petersham and Bernard A. Bassett in Texas; a daughter, Caroline Mousseau of
Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Ernest Bassett of Athol; a sister, Lou Ella
Ellsworth of Petersham; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was
born and raised in Petersham, son of Leslie M. and Marion M. (Mann) Bassett,
and lived here 39 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Co. A, 10th Armored
Infantry Regiment, in France and Germany. He was a prisoner of war of t
Nazis.
Mr. Bassett owned and operated the former Hillside Dairy Farm for 20 years. He
then worked for 13 years at L.S. Starrett Co., retiring in 1984.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356
Main St. The Rev. Jeffrey P. Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in
Ledgeville Cemetery, Petersham. Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9
tonight. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Contributions may be
made instead to the Memorial Fund of Athol Memorial Hospital, 2033 Main St.,
Athol, 01331.
