Carol Bassett Smith, 77
KENTS STORE, Va. - Carol Bassett Smith of Kents Store died Saturday, Nov. 6,
1999, one week before her 78th birthday. She was born Nov. 13, 1921, in
Philadelphia, the daughter of Edward Sebring and Alice (Ross) Bassett. She
grew up in Rockford and graduated from Central High School, class of 1939.
Also graduated from Duke University and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
While there, she was one of the beauty queens, and also met her future
husband, U.S. Marine Richard B. Smith. While Richard served in the Mari
Corps, the family moved frequently, stationed at several bases in the United
States and overseas. Richard attained the rank of colonel before retiring.
Carol was a member of DAR, Fluvanna Historical Society and Fluvanna Gardens
Club. Their home was built in 1720 and was beautifully restored by their sons.
She especially loved her dogs and feeding the birds on their acreage. Survivors
include husband, Richard, six sons and seven grandchildren. Services will be
at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in St. John Episcopal Church, Kents Store, with
arrangements by Sheridan Funeral Home. 11-11-2
