Robert Gates Bass Sr. (Picture included)
BASS, Robert Gates Sr., 89, of Midlothian, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 2, 2015. He died peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith Rieck; daughters, Anna Carolyn Bass, Frieda Bass Meehan (Ken); and a son, Robert Gates Bass Jr. (Wanda). He had five grandchildren, Andrew Hogue, Jack and Bridget Meehan, Caroline Bass and Robert Gates Bass III. Bob proudly claimed Rice, Va., as his home and visited family and friends there often. He performed in numerous capacities at Crestwood Presbyterian Church as a long-standing member, elder and youth leader. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Remey in the Pacific Fleet. After the war, he completed his engineering degree at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and worked in the concrete masonry industry, primarily at Concrete Pipe and Products. Professional organization leadership positions included State President of Virginia Concrete Masonry Association and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. For many years after retirement, Bob enjoyed attending and watching Virginia Tech football games and gardening at Rockwood Park. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 5, at Crestwood Presbyterian Church, 6627 Jahnke Rd. A graveside ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pisgah Church Cemetery, 202 Pisgah Church Rd., Rice, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crestwood Presbyterian Church.
