Jesse Raymond Canada
Jesse Raymond Canada passed away Friday morning at Riverside Hospital with his wife, Sylvia (Cochran), at his side just a few days short of their 60th anniversary.
Mr. Canada was born in Charlotte County, Va., to Hattie (Bass) and Morell Canada Sept. 9, 1916. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1940, Mr. Canada joined Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in the Shipwright's Department where he worked for over 35 years. After his retirement to his home by the water in Isle of Wight County, he remained active for many years with construction projects, gardening, fishing, and doing volunteer work. Dozens of children caught their first fish off Mr. Canada's dock. As a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Mr. Canada enjoyed singing and traveling with the Heartthrobs, attending his Bible study class, and working with Liberty Builders before his illness. He had moved to the Chesapeake Retirement Community in February.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Canada leaves his daughter, Karen Popadic of Wenham, Mass., and her husband, Bob; daughter, Carol Canada of Alexandria, Va.; daughter, Judy Griffin of Havensville, Kan., and her husband, Steve; daughter, Lynn Noce of Carrollton, Va.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Donald of Phenix, Va.; brother, Garland of Bedford, Va.; his twin brother, Joe of Phenix, Va.; and his beloved dog, Ginger.
A life celebration service for Mr. Canada will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home.
