JOHN "JACK" E. BASSETT, 82, passed away on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at Heritage Park Health Care Center, Fort Wayne. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Washington High School, Pittsburgh, in 1948 and from Western Pennsylvania Institute of Technology, in 1956. He moved to Fort Wayne, in 1958. He worked as a manager with Fort Wayne Structural Steel Company for 27 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of VFW <http://www.legacy.com/legacies/vfw/?personid=145767659&affiliateID=1136> Post 85, Knights of Columbus and the Korean War <http://www.legacy.com/legacies/korean-war/?personid=145767659&affiliateID=1136> Veterans Association. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and was an adventurer at heart. His hobbies were reading books on history, World War II <http://www.legacy.com/legacies/ww2/?personid=145767659&affiliateID=1136>, movie stars, and astronomy. He loved to listen to ragtime and jazz music. He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Bassett of Fort Wayne; son, John E. Bassett of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Christine M. Bauer and Mary (Curtis) Graves, both of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Bassett; brothers, William J. Bassett Jr., Robert Bassett and James Bassett; and sisters, Norma Koontz and Peggy Brough. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Road, with calling one hour prior. Fr. Andrew Budzinski officiating. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road, with vigil service at 8 p.m. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery.
