Wilbur E. Bassett, 89, of Marblehead, died peacefully on October 15, 2015 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers surrounded by his family. A devoted family man, he was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen (Donovan) Bassett. Born June 5, 1926 in Marblehead, Wilbur was the son of the late Wilbur E. and Mary E. (Larivee) Bassett. After high school, Wilbur joined the Navy and served during World War II. He was a graduate of UMass with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later attended Northeastern University and earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration. Wilbur retired in 1988 after a long career as a mechanical engineer at Western Electric in North Andover. Dedicated to the Town of Marblehead, he was elected to the Sewer Commission in 1972 and served the town he loved for 43 years as a Commissioner of the combined Water and Sewer Departments. He served in this capacity until the time of his death. He also served as an Electric Light Commissioner for many years. Wilbur was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus and the Freemasons. Wilbur is survived by a son, Wilbur Bassett Jr. and his wife Eve of Lynn, two daughters, Brenda Guy of Marblehead and Catherine Bassett of Boston, a granddaughter, Amanda Guy, a brother, Frederick Bassett of Marblehead, a sister, Marjorie Goolsby of Marblehead and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead on Tuesday, October 27, at 10 AM. Burial with honors to follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead on Monday, October 26, from 4-8 PM. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or to the Disabled American Veterans, online at www.day.org.
