Matilda M. Bassett Thomas
Matilda “Tillie” Thomas, 89, passed peacefully with prayer and family surrounding her Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in Canon City, Colorado. Tillie was born January 4, 1923 in Dodge City, Kansas to James Bracken and Irene Beatrice Bassett.
She graduated from Horace Mann High School, Gary, Indiana in June 1940. She was employed in the Gary school administration and at the Gary U.S. Steel Mill from 1940-1946. Tillie was united in marriage to Dudley P. Thomas on November 10, 1943. Moving to Utah in 1946, they established their home in American Fork, Utah, where they raised their family. She was employed at Utah Technical College from1965-1985. She and Dudley moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1993 to be closer to their children.
Tillie enjoyed participating in the Fremont-Custer County Historical Society, the Florence Senior Center music programs, and playing cards with friends at the Skyline Village Senior Apartments.
Tille is survived by her children, Paula Thomas of Canon City, Colorado and Bruce (Tamara) Thomas; and grandchildren, Rebecca Lynne, Kelley Leigh, and Kenneth Loren Thomas of Castle Rock, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Dudley.
Memorial Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Canon City. Inurnment will be at Mountain Vale Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society at 110 S. Rhoades, Canon City, Colorado 81212. Arrangements handled through Wilson Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.wilsonfuneralhome.org.
