Florence ?Flo? Bassett
CHATHAM Florence "Flo" Bassett of Chatham, MA passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
Born Florence Whitehead on July 26th, 1927 in Westport MA, she is survived by her husband of 73 years Ivan Bassett, Chatham Deputy Fire Chief, Retired and her 3 sons and their families: Jeffrey Basset and wife Christine of Brunswick, ME, James Bassett and wife Marie Sestile of Las Vegas, NV, Jon Basset and his fiancé Lisa Handrahan of Chatham, MA, 9 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren, 2 greatgreatgrandchildren.
Florence served during World War II as a clerical worker at Camp Edward in Borne, MA. She also served her community as a Sunday School Teacher, Cub Scout Den Mother, hockey mom, member of Eastern Star, and Red Hat Ladies. She was always there when her boys came home from school. Throughout the summers of the 1950s she could be found caring for her two older boys at Inward Point on Monomoy Island while Ivan commuted to work in town.
Often, she would be in her basement scallopshucking room until the wee hours of the morning, often opening 20 or more bushels a day.
She was also a chambermaid at a local motel, a waitress and many remember her working at Ben Franklin.
Her hobbies over the years included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and making scrubbies that she sold to friends and neighbors.
She will be remembered for her warmth and caring.
There will be no services due to Covid19.
Celebrating of life will be held at a later date to be announced.
