In Memory of Roland Webster Bassett
January 26, 1931 ? April 24, 2012
Roland Bassett passed away peacefully on April 24, 2012. He is survived by his wife and friend of 63 years, Margaret (Tubman) Bassett, daughters Darlene Bassett, Karen Dias and her husband Daniel sons Roland Bassett Jr. and his wife Holly, Russell and his wife Jane, Roger and his wife Nell. His wonderful life blessed him with 16 grandchildren: James and Joel Stoneton, Shelly and Meghan and Andrew Dias, Jennifer, Rebecca, Roland III, Isaiah, Rachel and Jacob, Russell Jr., Randall, and Jessica, Kate and Riley. I addition he was fortunate to have 17 great grandchildren: Abigail, Juliette, Haley, Kelsey, Michael, Justin, Francis, Roland IV, Lakota, Miles, Lucas, Sophie, Jacob, Joshua, Brody, Braxton and Zoey.
He was kind, compassionate, tough but gentle. For those that truly knew him, we will remember his gruff voice and his caring soul.
He built houses and hauled ice starting Brewster Ice in 1949 with a chest freezer and a pick up truck. The slogan "Cape Cod's Largest and Most Progressive Distributor of Ice" was his proud accomplishment. If you were struggling:go see Rolly he'll give you a job." He was an original member of the Brewster Police force in 1954. He has been the town Constable since 1956. He also served on numerous town boards and committees over the years.
He enjoyed his garden, his roses, Maine, and the outdoors. Friday nights and Sunday mornings were special times for him.
His love and dedication to his family were unsurpassed.
He was a very active member in the Masons. He was a 32nd degree Mason, he belonged to Dewitt Clinton Lodge in Sandwich. He was also a member of the South East Valley Scottish Rite, and a member of the Aleppo Temple.
He was a big man with a big heart. We will miss his smile and Charm.
A private service will be held.
