Madelyn L. Vincent, 88
Owner of Palabra shops; author; Cape Cod native
BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine - Madelyn L. "Pal" Vincent, 88, of Boothbay Harbor and
Clearwater, Fla., died Saturday at her home in Maine.
She was the wife of Parker H. Vincent, who died in 1999. They were
married in 1937.
Mrs. Vincent was born in Harwich. She graduated as valedictorian of
her class from Harwich High School in 1934 and attended Lowell Technical
School and Clark University.
She was a radio commentator in Massachusetts and was active in the PTA
and Girl Scouts when her children were young.
In 1960 she founded the Palabra Shop in Poland Springs, Maine. She
opened another Palabra Shop in Boothbay Harbor in 1965.
Mrs. Vincent was an Episcopalian, an avid collector of antiques, a
talented handicraftsman and a theater buff. She enjoyed traveling and spent
much time in London and Europe during the 1970's and '80s.
She wrote several books and monographs, including "The Moses Bottle"
and "The Vincent Family Cookbook."
Survivors include three daughters, Madelyn L. Huffmire of Ocean Point,
Anne Durand of Arlington, Va., and Valerie S. Vincent of Boothbay Harbor; four
sisters, Gloria Straughn of West Brewster, Anne Davis of Concord, N.H., Roland
W. Bassett of Brewster and Royce A. Bassett of Orleans; seven grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of Lee Vincent, who died in 197

Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at
St. Columbia's Episcopal Church, Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor, followed by a
graveside service at 2 p.m. at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Maine.
