Unoffocial ?Poet Laureate Of Harwich? Dies
David A. Bassett
David A. Bassett, age 87, passed away peacefully on January12 in Brewster. He leaves his beloved wife Dorothy of Harwich Port; his big brother Forrest A. (Gail) of South Yarmouth; his children, Lynn Bassett of Seattle, Washington, Jeffrey (Annalisa) of Charleston, South Carolina, and his devoted daughter Sandi Walsh of Dennisport; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his brother Philip and by Patricia, his first wife of 45 years.
A native Cape Codder and the youngest son of Emily and Earle F. Bassett, he attended Harwich schools. Upon graduation from high school, David enrolled in Northeastern University. Following his time in the Air Force, he transferred to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he earned his B.S. degree in 1960. David?s four-year service career included installing air-to-ground communications in Japan and on the islands off its coast. His employment years included time with DuPont in paint sales, as a buyer for the prestigious Steiger?s Department Store in Springfield, Mass, and in his later years as a self-employed handyman.
David loved walking the beach, finding treasures. He enjoyed jazz, haiku, and theatre. During his boyhood in the woods and waters of Harwich he embraced hunting, fishing, and hiking. He filled his adult days with running races, wood carving, and writing poetry. His book ?Seven Sparrows? was published in 2009.
Locally, he served as an elected Trustee of the Brooks Free Library and was involved with the Harwich Historical Society, the Friends of the Harwich Town Band, and Nauset Neighbors. David was a member of the 9AM coffee meeting at The Mason Jar where many local and national issues were debated. His family and friends will miss his natural joyful spirit, his love of laughter, and his million-dollar smile.
His family extends deep gratitude for the love expressed by the exceptional staff at Maplewood Brewster, and to the caring support team from Broadreach Hospice, the Alzheimer?s Family Support Center, as well as to the friends who supported him.
A gathering in gratitude and in celebration for his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, at the Morris, O?Connor, and Blute Funeral Home in Harwich Center. Burial will be private.
