Benjamin Everett Bassett
Benjamin Everett Bassett joined his Lord in Heaven, May 26, 2002. Born Sept.
6, 1908 in Somerville, Mass. to Benjamin and Elizabeth Bassett, Ben was the
eldest of seven children. The family moved to Cape Cod in 1914, then to
Seattle in 1920, where Ben became interested in the glass trade. After working
and living in Billings, Montana for several years, in 1931 he moved to Tacoma
where he became foreman for Tacoma Glass Company. Here, he met his first wife,
Pearl Storness. Married in 1932, they had three children: Diane, Benjamin and
Douglas. In 1937, Ben co-founded the B & B Glass Co., which thrived and
eventually branched to five locations prior to his retirement in 1970. While
building his company, Ben was also active in many community organizations;
Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Afifi Temple of the Shrine, Navy League, Masonic
Lodge, Lutheran Brotherhood, Bowling Congress, Orpheus Men’s Chorus, Ducks
Unlimited, Tacoma Sports- men’s Club, to name just a few. As a member of Hope
Lutheran Church, Ben played a major role in the construction of its present
location and served in all facets of its long service to the South Taco
community. Businessman, caring father and community servant, Ben still found
enough spare time to be an avid hunter and fisherman. As a sportsman and
conservationist, Ben worked conscientiously to keep the wilderness unspoiled.
Preceded in death by his first wife Pearl, his second wife Beatrice DeYoung
Bassett, and son Benjamin, Ben is survived by wife Sylvia Halstead Bassett,
daughter Diane Lynch, son Douglas (Sandy), brother Burton Bassett;
grandchildren Christopher (Mary) Lynch, Anthony (Christine) Lynch, Michael
Lynch, Peter Lynch, Douglas Bassett Jr., Devon (Shari) Bassett, Melissa (Mike)
Johnson, Megan (Matt) Keenan, Brianna Bassett and Adam Bassett; five great
grandchildren and many cherished nieces and nephews. He is also survived by
stepdaughters Marcia Halstead-Nichols, Gretchen Jovanovich, Cathy Mikkelsen
and Stephanie Marcelynas; step-grandchildren Ryan Wynn, David Skeels and
Antoinette Barger. Ben touched many lives and will be remembered and missed by
the hundreds who called him Grandpa, Uncle Ben, Pop and friend. He’ll be
missed, too, by those with whom he fished, hunted, golfed, bowled, play
horseshoes, and the many who had the pleasure of hearing him sing. Viewing
Friday, May 31, from 11am-9pm at Mountain View Funeral Home. A memorial
service will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 1 PM at Hope Lutheran Church, 7209
South Puget Sound Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98409. Charitable donations may be made
to the Benjamin E. Bassett Endowment Fund for Neighborhood Outreach c/o Hope
Lutheran Church, or to your favorite charity.
