- Francis Peterson Bassett farmed with his brother, DeWitt Clinton Bassett Jr. After graduating from Interlaken High School, he continued his studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Francis ?Pete? Bassett
From his first student pilot license in 1929, spurred by his interest in Lindbergh?s Atlantic flight, this Cambria resident and inventor has maintained a life-long love of aviation.
He became an aircraft designer with the Thomas Morse Aircraft Co. in Ithaca in 1929, stayed with the firm through its absorption by Consolidated Aircraft and then moved to the Curtiss Aeroplane Co. in 1932 and Bell Aircarft Corp. in 1939. He retired from Bell in 1979.
He holds four patents for aircraft innovations, including the ski-type landing gear on Bell helicopters. He was project engineer for the Bell RP-63 ?Pin Ball? target plane, used to train World War II bomber gunners by recording hits from special bullets.

Aviation Pioneer, Inventor
F. Peter Bassett, 85, an aviation pioneer, died Wednesday (October 28, 1992) in the Harris Hill Nursing Home, Clarence, after a short illness. He was born in Covert and lived in Lockport for more than thirty years. He attended the University of Michigan's School of Engineering. Bassett worked at Bell Aircraft as an aeronatuical designer and project engineer for more than forty years, retiring in 1970. He had several aircraft inventions and was issued patents that applied to airplanes and helicopters. He was an avid pilot of light aircraft. He was a member of the Aero Club of Buffalo, the Airplane Owners and Pilot Association and the OX5 Aviation Pioneers. He also was a member of Dutch Reform Church of Interlaken. Survivors include his wife, the former Elsie M. Schaefer of Williamsville; a daughter, Jane E. Wright of Maryland, and two grandsons. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family believes the Bible was presented to Mary Catherine Peterson and Dewitt Clinton Bassette at the time of their marriage in 1887. The dates for their births and for the parents' births and marriages were entered at that time. With some exception most events occurred in the Town of Covert, Seneca County, New York. All burials are at Lake View Cemetery, Interlaken, Seneca County, New York. Some members of the family dropped the final "e" from the Bassette name.
