John M. Bassett
BASSETT, John M., 55, of Lebanon, husband of Laura (Bonor) Bassett, died
Tuesday, (June 20, 2006) in Windham after a long and courageous battle with
Mesothelioma, a type of cancer. He was born May 9, 1951, in Hyannis, MA, the
son of the late Miller and Georgianna (Edwards) Bassett and had lived in
Canterbury and Southington before moving to Lebanon four years ago. He was a
graduate of Coventry High School, Manchester Community College, Hartford State
Technical School and was employed at Rogers Corporation in Manchester before
joining the Navy in 1971. He served aboard the USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG-20)
as an operations specialist radar man from 1971 to 1975. He was employed at
the former Corometrics Medical Systems in Wallingford (noe G.E.) from 1978 to
2001 and at Electric Boat in Groton from 2001 to the present. John loved
nature, hiking, exploring and spending time at his family's Camp Bowman in New
Hampshire. He enjoyed golf, antiques and working with his hands. He w
perfectionist at his woodworking. In addition to his wife he is survived by
Laura's sons, Ryan, Justin and Joshua Messier of Lebanon and Columbia; his
siblings, Janet Niemi of Brockton, MA, Pamela Burgess and her husband, Charlie
of Lisbon, Rachel Mackay of Richmond, VA, Thomas Bassett and his wife, Tina of
Canterbury, Timothy Bassett and his wife, Susan of Windham, Sarah Glennon and
her husband, James of Canterbury; his stepmother, Lorraine Bassett, a
granddaughter, Emily, several nieces and nephews. His family will recei
friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on
Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the
Columbia Congregational Church, Rte, 87, Columbia. Burial with military honors
will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery, Waterman Rd., Lebanon. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the International Mesothelioma
