William of Samuel Bass: Greensville County, Virginia
In the name of God Amen that I Samuel Bass of Greensville County and State of Virginia living in a low state of health but in perfect mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows, to wit.
First I lend unto my wife Fortune Bass one half of my plantation one half of my orchard and one half of my House to wit the Chamber Room during her life or widowhood
Secondly I give unto my son Sterling Bass the other half of my lands Orchard and House and as the death of my wife, I give unto my son Sterling the other half of my Lands Orchard and House to him to him and his heirs and assigns.
Thirdly I give unto my son Sterling one negroe girl by the name of Pheriby to him and his heirs forever.
Fourthly I give unto my son Allen Bass one negroe manley [namely?] the name of Mark one boy the name of Abram to him and his heirs forever I give unto my son Allen a negroe man by the name of Jim at the death of my wife to him and his heirs forever I also give unto my son Allen my part of the Bond that Holliday Hayley and myself has against esuire Fields to him and his heirs forever and also a Bond I have against Robert Paseley if ever got to him and his heirs forever
I give unto my daughter Dolly Dupree one negroe wench by the name of Rachel to her and her heirs forever
I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Bass one negroe man by the name of Peter and also a negroe girl by the name of Notis a boy by the name of Mark one side saddle to her and her heirs forever. I also lend to my daughter Elizabeth or to have the use of a Horse during her single life and at the death of my wife or at the marriage of my daughter I give to her a Horse at the price of fifteen pounds to her and her heirs forever.
I give unto my daughter Sally Bass a negroe wench by the name of Bridget also a negroe girl by the name of Sylvia to her and her heirs forever I also give to my daughter Sally at the death of my wife of her widowhood a negroe man by the name of Punch to her and her heirs forever I also give to my daughter Sally a riding chair I also lend to my daughter Sally or to have the use of a Horse during her single life and at the death of my wife or at the marriage of my daughter I give to her a Horse at the price of fifteen Pounds to her and her heirs forever.
I also lend unto my wife Jim, Punch and Grace during her natural life or her widowhood and also a negroe girl by the name of Patience all my stock horses cattle sheep hogs household and furniture after paying my debts--during her natural life or widowhood and after her death or widowhood the two negroes I have not her to give away Patience and Grace and the estate I lend to my wife to be equally divided amongst all mu children and not to be sold but men appointed to divide the estate at my wife's death or widowhood.
My negroe wench Nan I dont give to any person unless she was to live with either of the children But to have maintainance amongst my wife or children
It is my wish that the negroe Natt that I am at law for to still remain in force of Law until determined and if I get the said negroe Natt to be equally divided amongst my four children to wit Allen, Sally, my son in law James Dupree and Elizabeth
If I don't recover the said negroe not my four children above mentioned to pay all costs out of their part of the estate.
I do hereby appoint Allen Bass and Sterling Bass executors of this my last will and testament revoking all other wills heretofore at any time made by me.
In witness where of I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty third day of December One thousand seven hundred and ninety five.
