Oscar Bassett
OSCAR BASSETT, 79, of May Street, a retired foreman and aircraft mechanic, died yesterday at Evergreen House Health Center, East Providence.
He was the husband of Jennie (Mignacca) Bassett. Born in Warwick, a son of the late Oscar Bassett and Doris (Reynolds) Bassett Collins, he had lived in Warwick before moving to North Providence 31 years ago.
He was a foreman and aircraft mechanic at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station for 32 years, retiring in 1973, and a retired special police officer in the Warwick Police Department.
Mr. Bassett worked in the merchant marine during World War II.
He was a member of the Warwick Elks, Fraternal Order of Police, the National Rifle Association, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Warwick Sportsman's Association, and the Wallum Lake Rod and Gun Club.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed bow hunting, fishing and boating, had built quahog skiffs, and at age 59 received his private pilot's license.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Barbara DurrellDickerson of Warwick and Norma Jean Bassett of Providence; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Oliver of Narragansett and Jane Bucco of North Providence; two stepsons, Charles Czerwein of North Providence and John Czerwein of Smithfield; and four grandchildren, 13 stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreatgrandchildren. He was the father of the late Elliott M. and Steven A. Bassett, and brother of the late Niles V., T. Raymond and Elliott R. Bassett.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. from Mariani Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins St., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Church of the Presentation, Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
