      Roy Thurman Bassett
      COLLEYVILLE - Roy Thurman Bassett, 73, passed away in Fort Worth on Sunday, February 9, 2003, after a five-year battle with cancer.
      Memorial service: 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church of Colleyville.
      Memorial: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Colleyville, 5601 Pleasant Run Rd., Colleyville, Texas 76034 or to Team in Training, The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, North Texas Chapter, 12850 Spurling Dr., Suite 220, Dallas, Texas 75230.
      He was a Methodist minister for 29 years and retired having served several churches in the Central Texas Conference. After retiring from the ministry, he fulfilled a longtime dream of driving 18-wheelers. Roy always loved "the big rigs."
      Roy Thurman Bassett was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Amarillo. He was a graduate of Texas Tech University and earned a bachelor of divinity and a doctor of ministry from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. He served in the United States Marines Corps during the Korean War, serving 14 months in Korea during the time of hostilities. After his second retirement, Roy was an avid bicyclist and was part of the Team in Training for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. In 2000, he rode 100 miles in Tucson, Arizona, and in 2002 rode 100 miles in Lake Tahoe, California. Both of these rides were part of his way of helping others fight cancer. Roy was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Colleyville, where the memorial service will be held. His parents, Roy Elbert Bassett and Estelle Bassett Barrett and L.W. Barrett preceded him in death.
      Survivors: Wife, Mary Cooper Bassett of the home; James Clifford Bassett and wife, Sylvia, of Grand Prarie; Roy Elbert Bassett II and wife, Jennifer, of Lubbock; Susan Bassett of Euless; grandchildren, Jamie Bassett, Will Bassett, Roy Thurman "Troy" Bassett II, Meranda Bassett, Callie Bassett, Matt Bennett, Rosemary Ojeda, Laura Ojeda and Joe Ojeda; stepbrother, Don Barret of Houston; stepsisters, Ann Barrett Whitt of Sugarland, Ellen Thomas of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ida Sallee of Squim, Washington; niece, Jimmie Fields of Midlothian; and a host of friends and loved ones.
