- Wilmer Wilson Bassett was educated at Interlaken High School in New York. At the age of 19, he entered Cornell University and took a three year special course. In 1907 he accepted a position as assistant superintendent of the North Florida Pecan Company in Monticello, Florida. After superintending the setting of a 600 acre pecan orchard, Wilmer began business for himself raising nursery stock consisting of pecans, Satsuma oranges and kumquat under the name of "Florida Nurseries". Gradually adding to his acreage, he soon had 740 acres with twelve tenant houses, with an average payroll of 30 hands per day. The nursery was supplemented by a dairy herd of 50 cows and 30 head of young cattle from which milk was sold both retail and wholesale.

Death Takes W.A. Bassett
Interlaken - Wheeler A. Bassett, 86, retired farmer, died Thursday night (February 22, 1945), in his home in West End Avenue, after a short illness.
Mr. Bassett was born on July 24, 1858, on a farm south of the village, which has been in the Bassett family since the early part of the nineteenth century.
A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Bassett always took an active part in civic affairs. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last January.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Agnes M. Thomas Bassett; three sons, Wilmer Bassett, Monticello, Florida; Henry Bassett, Watkins Glen and Corporal Thomas Bassett with the U.S. Army in England; two daughters, Mrs. Earl Wilson, Interlaken, and Mrs. Seward Brooks, Hayts Corners; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Four of his grandsons are with the armed forces overseas.
Funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the home by the Reverend George A. Cole Jr., pastor of the Baptist Church, with burial in Lakeview Cemetery.

Ray Bassett Remains Manager of Plant
Bassett Dairies, Inc., of Tallahassee, along with the company?s two distribution branches, Gulf Coast Dairies Inc., of Panama City and Spring Valley Dairies, Inc., at Crestview, have been purchased by The Borden Company.
Announcement was made last night by Curry J. Bassett, general manage of the dairy firm, who said the transactions is effective immediately.
The Tallahassee operations will be known as Borden?s Bassett Dairies, while the ones in Panama City and Crestview will be known as Boarden?s Dairy. No figures were released as to the purchase price.
The sale brings together two names in the dairy food field well known to resident of this area. The Bassett firm has been distributing milk in Tallahassee and vicinity for 31 years. Borden grocery and cheese products have been available in grocery stored throughout this section of Florida for many years.
In his announcement Bassett emphasized that the change in ownership will not affect the d airy plant?s operations or products, and that all of its employees will remain in their present positions.
Curry J. Bassett, Secretary-treasurer and general manager of Bassett Dairies, Inc., will remain in charge of the Tallahassee operation. Ray S. Bassett will continue as manager of the plant in Panama City and Lamar Garrett as manager of the plant in Crestview.
