Lyman A. Bassett, Ex-Smyrna Mayor
Services for Lyman A. Bassett, 81, of East Main Street, who died Sunday at
Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at
Burgess Funeral Home, Earlville. Burial will be in Wilcox Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral hom
Preston St. Fire department services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral
home.
Mr. Bassett was a life resident of Smyrna. He retired in 1960 as a self-
employed dairy farmer and retired in 1972 after 35 years as a school bus
driver with Sherburne-Earlville Central School. Mr. Bassett served as mayor of
the village of Smyrna from 1961 to 1969 and also was an assessor for the town
of Smyrna. Mr. Bassett was an honorary member of the Smyrna Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Frieda; four sons, Robert and David, both of Smyrna,
Clarence of Clifton Park and Richard of Agawam, Mass.; two daughters, Nancy
Bassett of Smyrna and Linda Manchester of Sherburne; 16 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
