Mrs. Milton E. Bassett
Services for Mrs. Marguerite S. Bassett, of 208 Old Mill road, Fairfield, widow of Milton E. Bassett, who died Monday, will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Park Street Congregational church, with the Rev. H. Parker Lansdale officiating. Burial will be in Central Burial Ground, Hamden.
The Wilmot, West and Goulding funeral home, 1209 Post road, Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Bridgeport, Mrs. Bassett was an area resident all of her life. She was a member of the Park Street Congregational church 60 years, where she was a past president of the Women's league. She was a former treasurer of the Friday Evening Book club, and a member of the Bridgeport YMCA auxiliary.
Survivors are two sons, Milton E. Bassett Jr. of North Pomfret, Vt., and John P. Bassett of Fairfield; a daughter, Mrs. Noah Halper of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a brother, J. Louis Schwertle of Fairfield; a sister, Mrs. Frank Smethurst of Trumbull, and eight grandchildren.

John Putnam Bassett
John Putnam Bassett, age 81, died Monday, November 1, 2004, at his home in North Pomfret, Vt. He was born on October 3, 1923, in Bridgeport, the son of Milton and Marguerite (Schwerdtle) Bassett. Mr. Bassett was a 1941 graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield. John enrolled in Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, but interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Army. John served in the infantry of the European Theater of World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home to graduate from Oberlin in 1947. On the day of their graduation, John married Nancy Elizabeth Johnson. John worked for the Aetna Life and Casualty Co. in Bridgeport, and in San Francisco, Calif. In 1952 he started his own business in Bridgeport, knocking on doors to sell insurance. John and Robert Brown merged their businesses in 1948 to create Beardsley, Brown, and Bassett. By the time of John's retirement in 1988 the agency had grown to the second largest in Connecticut. Much of John's life was devoted to his community and the organizations that were important to him. He was chairman of the Fairfield YMCA, the Greater Bridgeport YMCA, and the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County. He was president of the Connecticut Independent Agents Association, The YMCA Morgage Club, and Brooklawn Country Club. John was a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Bridgeport Rotary Club, he served as a board member of the Bridgeport Rotary Housing Committee and the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation. He was a director and honorary director of Lakeview Cemetery, also in Bridgeport. John was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Fairfield. In 1991 he received the Greater Bridgeport Bar Association Distinguished Service Award. John was also President and Agent for the Oberlin Class of 1947. After his retirement from Beardsley, Brown, and Bassett, John served as volunteer director of development for the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, helping to increases to the endowment from three to nine million during his five year tenure. In 1993, John and Nancy Bassett moved to North Pomfret, Vt., where John's grandmother was born. John was a founder of the Upper Valley Community Foundation, Chairman of the Pomfret Emergency Services, Auditor for the Town of Pomfret and Auditor for the North Pomfret Congregational Church. John was a member of the Woodstock Rotary Club, the Woodstock Country Club, the Vermont Senior Golf Association, and the 70 plus Skiers. At the time of his death John was working to complete the building fund for the Pomfret Fire Department and Fast Squad. John is survived by his wife, Nancy Bassett of North Pomfret, Vt.; a daughter Elizabeth Bassett and her husband, John Pane, of Charlotte, Vt.; a son, James Bassett and his wife; Ellen Bassett of Canterbury, N.H.; three grandsons, Putnam Pane of Charlotte, Vt.; Jesse and John Bassett of Canterbury; two granddaughters, Victoria Pane of Charlotte, Vt., and Hannah Bassett of Canterbury, N.H.; a sister, Jean Halper; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Woodstock, Vt.
