Helen Bassett 1918-2006
CHAMPION - Helen Mardel Bassett of Champion Ohio, died peacefully at her
residence Wednesday, July 26, 2006.
She was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Warren, Ohio, at the home of B.J. Gillen. She
was the daughter of the late Herman Loftus and Ellen Baker Loftus. She married
Garland B. Bassett on April 21, 1938, and he preceded her in death April 7,
1963. Helen attended St. Mary's School in Warren through the ninth grade and
then Orwell High School, where she graduated.
She was a member of the NIAM Club in Warren. Helen was a "Nan" to many
children in her neighborhood and beyond. She loved spending time with her dog
Buck and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She also enjoyed playi
cards, crocheting and preparing meals for family at holidays. She was an
excellent cook and baker.
Surviving are a son, Charles and Tracey Bassett of Bristolville, Ohio; a
daughter, Mary Ann and Joseph Davis of Niles, Ohio, grandchildren: Kimberly
and Edward Hlas, Jeffrey Grell and Cathy Hartung, Gea Bassett, Ashlay Bailey
and Gena Bassett. Great-grandchildren: Azyln Bailey, Carly Hlas and Joey Hlas.
She is also survived by a sister, Edith Griffith of Sarasota, Fla., a
brother, William Loftus of Champion, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her
parents, her husband Garland Bassett on April 7, 1964, two sons: Richard and
Donald Bassett and a brother John Loftus.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church in Niles, Ohio. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 28,
2006, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Interment will be at Orwell Sou
Cemetery, Orwell Ohio.
Family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Our Lady
of Mount Carmel Church on Robbins Avenue, and/or Forum Health Hospice, 8747
Squires Lane N.E., Warren, Ohio 44484.
