Phyllis Evora "Chi Chi" Bassett
Phyllis 'Chi Chi' Evora Bassett, Cushing, died Wednesday July 13. She
was born February 26, 1924 in Trenton, Missouri to S.B. and Mae (Igleheart)
Blackford. She grew up in Paden, Oklahoma. She married Dr. Clifford M. Bassett
on December 10, 1950 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The couple living in Cushing,
where they raised their three daughters Renee, Betsy and Lisa. Phyllis was a
well-known philanthropist and community activist. She was extremely involved
with her family and her church. She was a past president of the Payne County
Medical Auxiliary and the State Woman's Auxiliary of the Oklahoma Medic
Society, and a delegate to the Women's Auxiliary to the American Medical
Association and the Southern Medical Association Women's Auxiliary. In 1972,
she was awarded the University of Oklahoma's 'Outstanding Mother Award' by the
OU student body. She was the first woman to receive this honor. She was the
fifth honoree to receive the 'Above and Beyond Award' from the University of
Oklahoma. She had also served as a past member of the University of Oklahoma
Alumnae Board. Phyllis was an active member of the Geographic Club, serving on
many of their committees; the Cushing Chamber of Commerce and of the First
United Methodist Church. Survivors include her children Renee and Randy Willis
of Stillwater, Betsy and Ken Hibbard of Cushing, Lisa and Alan Synar of Edmon;
her grandchildren Jillian and Ryan Blakemore of Cushing, Andrea and Bla
Palmer of Oklahoma City, Elena Willis of Oklahoma City, Valerie Will
Norman, Lauren Synar of Edmond, and Cliff Synar of Edmond, her sister June
Morton and family of Drumright, longtime friend Wanda Kinsey and numero
other family members and friends. Memorial Contributions may be made to the
First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 888 Cushing OK 74023, in
her memory. Condolences may be e-mailed to the Bassett family at
DavisFhCushing@sbcglobal.net. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 18,
2005 at 10:00 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in
the Fairlawn Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral
Home.
