Raymond S. Bassett, 77, of New Kensington, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2003) at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, from complications of surgery.
He was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Plum, and lived in New Kensington for more than 50 years.
A World War II veteran, he served with the Marine Corps.
Prior to retiring in 1986, he was a grinder more than 20 years at ALlegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., Brackenridge Works. Previously, he worked 17 years for PPG Industries, Creighton, East Deer.
Mr. Bassett was a member of the Independent Benevolent Order of Elks, Lodge No. 294, in New Kensington.
He enjoyed watching sports on television.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara Williams Bassett; three sons, Bruce Bassett of Atlanta, Charles Bassett of New Kensington, and Gerald Williams of Houston; a daughter, Diane G. Bassett of New Kensington; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Stanley Bassett and Ernest (Patricia) Bassett, both of New Kensington.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Bassett; his parents, Charles and Naomi Ross Bassett; and two sisters, Charlotte Cosby and Yvette Houser.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Ross G. Walker Funeral Home Ltd., a family owned and operated funeral home, 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Officiating will be the Rev. Reginald L. Johnson. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Arnold. The Allegheny Valley Marine Corps League No. 827 will hold services at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Abigail Cornelius Peterson, 80, of New Kensington, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, in Forbes Hospice, Shadyside. She was born Aug. 6, 1926, in New Kensington, to the late Elijah and Myrtle (Butler) Johnson. She attended Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Arnold. Ms. Peterson worked at Interstate Uniform as a seamstress until her early retirement in November 1984. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and, most of all, reading her Bible. Beloved mother of Bruce Bassett, of Birmingham, Ala.; Diane G. Bassett, of New Kensington; Charles R. Bassett, of Indianapolis; Denise A. "Tyna" Peterson, of Atlanta, and Charisse "Reasa" Peterson, of Houston, Texas. Beloved sister of Gloria Bassett, of New Kensington; Jerome Johnson, of Pittsburgh, and the Rev. Fred (Ruth), the Rev. Reginald (Delores) and Gerald "Butch" (Debbie) Johnson, all of Carlisle. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Chad R. Bassett; sisters, Shirley Mae Brown, Hanaka Washington, Maria Williams and Vivian Johnson, and brothers, Robert Keys, Kenzo Kusyama and George Wallace.
