W.H. Bassett, Ex-Reynolds Official, Dies
William H. Bassett Jr., retired assistant treasurer and corporate credit
manager for Reynolds Metals Co. and former moderator of the Richmond Baptist
Association, died yesterday at his residence in Henrico County. He was 69.
Born in Richmond, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying
more than 50 missions as a b-17 bomber pilot in Europe. He joined Reynolds as
an employee in the mail room and rose through the ranks. He served as regional
credit manager before being promoted to assistant treasurer and corpora
credit manager. His expertise was in credit and financial analysis. Mr.
Bassett retired from Reynolds in 1982 after 41 years. Since then, he had been
president of Bassett Management Consultants Inc. here. Mr. Bassett was a
former president of the National Association of Credit Management and of the
Foreign Credit Interchange Bureau. He had taught on the adjunct faculties of
Temple University Evening School, Dartmouth College and Harvard University. He
was a deacon at Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church and served as moderator of
the Richmond Baptist Association in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Jean England Bassett; and two sons, W. Randolph Bassett and Stephen H.
Bassett, both of Richmond. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Woody
Funeral Home's Parham Chapel, 1771 Parham Road. Burial will follow in Forest
Lawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Millhiser Hospice
