- Howard (SSN# 348-09-9455) served in the US Army from 18 Jan 1944 until
23 Nov 1945. He was a private in the Medical Corp in London, Engla
Medical Laboratory Technician. He was also an athlete playing professional
basketball in 1936 and was a bowler (Hall of Fame 1967). He worked at Pabst as
a chemist before World War II. He was active in the food and restaurant
business. He worked at the Peoria Board of Trade from in 1940 to 194
owned and operated the Sherwood Inn on Galena Road after World War II from
1946 to 1954. He managed the Illinois Valley Yacht Club from 1955 until
1974. He began Action Catering in 1974 until about 1981. He then travelled
extensively in his motor home until his death in 1985.

Howard L. Bassett, 76, of 4202 N. Keenland died at 1:45 a.m. Friday at Methodist Medical Center, where he was admitted Dec. 10.
Born Sept. 30, 1909, in Salinas, Kan., to Louis W. and Ada M. Wood Bassett, he married Victoria A. ?Vicki? Sprague Feb. 7, 1931, in Galesburg.
A veteran of the Army Medical Corps, World War II, he was lifetime member and manager of the Ivy Club 20 years. He later was co-owner of Action Catering six years, retiring in 1981.
He was inducted into the Greater Peoria Bowling Association?s Hall of Fame Oct. 28, 1967. His entry into the hall completed the second combination of brothers inducted. His brother, Gordon, was named to the hall in 1961.
He won the all-event championship of the association in 1936 with a total of 1878 pins. He won the Peoria Match Game Championship in 1954 with an average of 191. He also was a member of the Red Diamond Battery association championship team in 1952.
He was the Journal Star Brothers Bowling Tournament champion (actual pins) in 1959 with his brother Gordon.
In his youth, he was high-scoring Central High School and independent basketball players, later playing professional basketball with other local stars. In 1964, he pitched a perfect game at Kickapoo as a softball hurler.
He was past president of the Club Managers Association of America, past president of Barth Rangers, member of VFW Post 2602, Peoria Heights; and Good Sam Club. He also was an honorary deputy sheriff in 1971.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Louis Tyler ?Ty? Bassett of Peoria and Loyal Gordon ?Sonny? Bassett of Springfield, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Clifford (Sharron ?Sis?) Tucker of South Holland; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Stella Birkett of Peoria. Two brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wilton Mortuary, where services will be at 1 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Kenneth R. Yocum will officiate and burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
