William Bassett Rites Held Today
Funeral services were set for this afternoon at Sarasota, Fla., for William F. Bassett, 77, former prominent resident of this city and former associate with Columbus Handle and Tool company.
Mr. Bassett, who was known as Babe, died Saturday noon in Sarasota Memorial hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were to be held in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at Sarasota with interment in Sarasota Memorial park.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Janet Munn Bassett; a daughter, Mrs. Sue Bassett Carlson of Sarasota; three grandchildren and a brother, H. Lee Bassett of Cleveland, also a former Columbus resident. Edmund Munn of Columbus is a brother-in-law.
The family said memorials to Mr. Bassett could be sent to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 222 South Palm avenue, Sarasota. Mr. Bassett served on the vestry of the church, was a Bishop's man and a member of the brotherhood of St. Andrew.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett moved from Columbus to Cleveland in 1933 after Columbus Handle and Tool company merged with American Fork and Hoe company of Cleveland, later becoming True Temper. Mr. Bassett served as a sales executive with American Fork and Hoe, but retired in 1938 and the family moved to Sarasota, residing at 1686 North drive.
Mr. Bassett was born at Piqua, Ohio, July 31, 1891, son of Herbert H. and Myra Wilcox Bassett. The father established the Columbus Handle and Tool company here in 1891 and both sons were with the firm here.
William was graduated from Columbus high school and attended Purdue and Cornell universities and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi fraternity. He was a charter member and past president of Columbus Kiwanis club and former member of St. Paul's Episcopal church here. He also took part in many amateur theatricals in the city and was among the city's early golf enthusiasts.

Mr. and Mrs. William F. Bassett of Whitfield Estates had as recent house guests their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold A. Carlson, who left recently for their home in Detroit; and Capt. and Mrs. D. Lee Bassett, who have returned to Cleveland, O. Capt. Bassett, who is a nephew of William Bassett, arrived recently from Japan on terminal leave.
