      Mrs. Phyllis H. Bassett, 84, of Vero Beach, Florida, died March 13, 2002 at Indian River Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of John M. Bassett, her husband of 57 years. She was born on December 14, 1917 in Norwich, Pennsylvania and was the daughter of the late Ralph Franklin and Ruth Stover Harbach.
      Phyllis was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Vero Beach. She is survived by her son, John A. Bassett, daughter-in-law Melinda and grandchildren Sarah and Andrew, all of Jefferson, Maryland. Sister, Beth Donovan and husband Dean of Vero Beach, two nieces, Ruth Aldrich of Vero Beach and Barbara George of Wisconsin; nephew, the Reverend Barry Harbach of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Franklin Harbach, Jr.
      Phyllis did her undergraduate work at Lock Haven State University. She earned a M. Ed. from Penn State University. She taught for 17 years in the Pennsylvania School System before teaching in Maryland for the Montgomery County Public Schools. She worked in administration and supervision before retiring in 1977. She and her husband moved to Vero Beach in 1978.
      Mrs. Bassett joined the Auxiliary of Indian River Memorial Hospital on June 18, 1980. She quickly assumed several leadership roles within the organization and served three terms as president from 1988-1991. In addition she served as chairman of the 100 member Reception/Escort/Courier Service from 1991 until her death.
      Phyllis served as editor of the Association of Florida Hospital Auxiliaries State Magazine from 1993-1995. The Auxiliary declared May 8, 1996, "Phyllis Bassett Day" when she was awarded the Auxiliary's highest honor, Life Member. She received a bar for 20 years of service in May, 2001 and was honored on December 12, 2001 with a resolution from the Auxiliary Board naming the Auxiliary's Scholarship Fund, the Phyllis H. Bassett Scholarship Fund. She received a pin for 32,000 hours of service in January, 2002. She devoted more time to the Indian River Memorial Hospital Auxiliary than anyone in its 50 year history. Phyllis also received the Ted Brown Award on December 13, 2000 in recognition of her exemplary service to all citizens of Indian River County. The award was presented by the Taxpayers Association of Indian River County.
      A memorial service will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Vero Beach, on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Jack Diehl, III and the Reverend Diane Loberger officiating.
      In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church or the Auxiliary of Indian River Memorial Hospital.
