Arnold Bailey, Noted Engineer, Is Dead at 63
FRANCESTOWN ? Arnold Brown Bailey, 63, died suddenly Sunday evening in Waltham, Mass. Death was attributed to natural causes.
Born in Providence, R.I., he lived here and in Concord Mass., for many years. An internationally known electrical engineer, he was educated at Lynn Classical High School, graduated from MIT in 1925 and was a pioneer at Bell Telephone Laboratories and spent the last 11 years at Lincoln Laboratories and Mitre Corporation in the Boston Area.
He was the inventor of the coaxial antenna for ultra high frequencies; the author of a book on antenna systems and holder of many patents in the fields of antenna systems, propagation, and navigation; was co-inventor of the Omni-Beam method of airplane navigation; and inventor of the well-known Bailey antenna.
In recognition of this work, he was made a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 1965. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Massachusetts, the Richard C. MacLaurin Lodge, AF and AM, in Cambridge; and the Unitarian Church, Francestown.
Member of the family include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy (Basset) Bailey; and a son, Arnold Basset Bailey, a sophomore at Bowdoin College in Maine.
Services will be conducted here Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Unitarian Church by Rev. Richard Allen Day, pastor.
Entombment will be in No. 3 Cemetery., Francestown, with burial there in the spring.
There will be no calling hours.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions be sent to the Arnold B. Bailey Memorial Fund, at the Unitarian Church, in care of Mrs. Kenneth Edwards, treasurer, Francestown.
The Woodbury and Son Funeral Home, Peterborough, is in charge of arrangements.
