Bette Bland Bracewell
Bette Bland Bracewell, 78, a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Florida, died at her home in Cypress Village on October 27 from an extended illness. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, class of 1943. She was the daughter of Eddie Bland, who was a founder of NASCAR and its first Vice President, who also was instrumental in bringing auto racing to Northeast. Bette and her husband, Joe, were happily married since April 19, 1968. Bette was a member of Eastern Star and was active in Daughters of the Nile. She was a long-time, active member of First Christian Church of the Beaches. She is survived by her husband, Joseph C. Bracewell, Jr.; two sons, Wesley Bassett and Maurice Bassett; two stepsons, Ronnie Owens and Kevin Owens (deceased); one step daughter, Kathy Owens; two grandsons, Blake and Nowlin; her beloved dog, Bella; and one sister, Edine Duke. Bette worked with her father at Eddie Bland Motors, then at Arlington Fuel Oil, and later at the Florida State Beverage Department. Afterward, she enjoyed working in the real estate business in Jacksonville. During 1986, through 2001 she was owned and operated Happy Tours by Jobet, a travel-tour business. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Family will receive friends 6-8pm, Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach. Funeral services will be 2pm, Thursday, October 30, 2003 at First Christian Church in Neptune Beach. Interment to follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
