OSKALOOSA — Ruth Mary Dillard Bassett Bolsem, 91, of Eldridge, and formerly of
Oskaloosa, passed away Monday morning, March 23, 2009, at the Heartland Health
Care Center in Moline, Ill. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m.,
Thursday, March 26, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa
with the Rev. Doug Bolsem officiating. Interment will be in the East La
Memorial Park Cemetery in Sacramento, Calif. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.,
Wednesday morning, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family
will be at the funeral chapel from 1 p.m. to service time on Thursday
afternoon. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Ruth Mary
Dillard, daughter of Charles and Mary Kentfield Dillard, was born Aug. 23,
1917, in Oskaloosa. She was a 1935 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. Ruth was
a telephone operator for several years before her marriage to Lyle "Mik
Bassett in May 1939. They lived in several cities due to Mike's career; they
included Chicago, Ill., Houston, Texas, Washington State, St. Joseph, Mo., and
eventually Sacramento, Calif., where they settled. Ruth was employ
stenographer and she also did volunteer work for several different charitable
organizations. Mike passed away in Sacramento in 1987. Ruth married Cornie
Bolsem in 1989. They lived in Oelwein, and wintered in Sacramento. In 1991,
they moved to Oskaloosa and continued to spend winters in Sacramento. They
moved to Eldridge in September, 2007. Ruth was a member and an active volunteer
of the First Christian Church in Sacramento. She enjoyed tending her flower
garden, shopping for antiques, square dancing, and collecting colored glass
vases and other glassware. Her family includes her husband, Cornie Bolsem of
Eldridge; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karen Bassett, of Sweet Home
Ore.; a granddaughter, Robin; one great-granddaughter, Sabrina and several
nieces. Besides her parents and her first husband, Ruth was preceded in death
by a grandson, Robert Bassett; a brother, Howard Dillard and two sister
Helen Tregeloff and Mabel Whitehead.
