- DEED OF VALOR WINS HONOR FOR SERGT. BASSETT
Soldier From Martin County is Cited in Orders for Deed of Exceptional Heroism
(Martin County SENTINEL?)
Jay Bassett, born and raised in Martin County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sol
Bassett, who moved to Danbury, Wis, a few months ago, is one of the heroes of
the war.
Every army man knows that it means something to be "mentioned in
orders" for acts of special heroism in action. Jay attained that distinction,
as you will note by General Orders No. 11,Hq, 9th Inf Brigade, Dec 31, 1918,
quoted as follows:
"The following named enlisted man is cited in orders for distinguished
conduct in action.: Sergt Jay P. Bassett, Co. E, 60th Infantr
On the night of Sept. 16 and 17, 1918, Co. L. 312th Inf. was ordered
to relieve Co. E 60th Inf, then holding the front lines in the Bois de Bonvaux
St. Mihiel. Arriving at battalion headquarters, they found no one capable of
guiding them to the new position held by Co. E, the exact location of which
was not generally known.
Sergt. Bassett, company clerk attached to battalion headquarters
volunteered to lead the relief to the lines. Upon nearing the front lines a
heavy bombardment was encountered. The company was halted and Sergt. Bassett
set out alone through the barrage to locate the company. Disregarding his own
personal safety he continued his search until he found the company
headquarters, whereupon he again passed through the barrage returning to Co.
L. 312 Inf.
The courage displayed by this voluntary act of bravery was of an
exceptional degree and made possible the accomplishment of the relie
