Shirley Bassett Kennedy Pearce
Shirley Bassett Kennedy Pearce, 81, of Ormond Beach passed away on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015. She was born Dec. 20, 1933, in Leesburg, Fla., to Charles Lynwood Bassett and Nellie Bassett. She also had a twin who died at birth. She went to grade school and high school in Tavares. She graduated from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla., in 1955. She was a member of the alpha Delta pi sorority. She was elected Miss Florida Southern. She married Truman Kennedy their senior year and after graduation moved to Columbus, Ohio. Their first son Truman III was born in 1956, they were then transferred to the Pittsburgh area, specifically Latrobe, Pa., where their second son, Charles Taylor and daughter, Virginia were born. In 1967, they moved back to Florida and she began her teaching career in the Ormond Beach area and continued to teach until she retired. She is survived by her first husband, Truman H. Kennedy Jr. of Ormond Beach, Fla.; sons, Truman "Pat" H. (Susi) Kennedy, III of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Charles T. (Carala) Kennedy of Ormond Beach, Fla.; daughter, Virginia (Joseph) Hoffman of St. Augustine, Fla.; grandchildren, Patrick Hagan Kennedy, Katie Kennedy, Jacquelyn Kennedy, Charles Kennedy II, Jennifer Lynn Hoffman, and Julie Ann Hoffman. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Leighann Larson Kennedy. A memorial service will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, Tavares.
