      Sadie Baer Bassett
      On Tuesday, January 11, 1944, Sadie Scott Baer Bassett, wife of the Citizen editor, reached the end of life's troubled and tempestuous trail that leads to that house not made with hands.... Rosary was said Wednesday evening and funeral services were held Thursday morning, January 13, at St. Francis Church, the Reverend Wlliam Brennan officiating and interment followed in the Bassett plot in Hillcrest Cemetery, complying with her requests. The pall bearers were: Geo Kloster, M.V. Yale, Chas E. Moore, Eldon LePere, Lyle Bailey, and F.J. Rieth; honorary bearers: Jim McKinnon, F.J. Coombs. Rudolf Norske, J.A. Davidson, Henry Swenson, and John Flemming....Mrs. Bassett former prominent Spokane resident, was born in Missouri, coming west to a large farm between Visilia and Tularie, California, then to Cheney in the 1880's. She was the step-daughter of the late W.H. Bishop, who was auditor of Spokane Company in 1881. She was the widow of the late Harry Baer, whom she married in 1892; he was associated with the Jacob Goetz in the establishment of the Cour d'Alene Hotel in Spokane and original owners of the Bunker Hill mine. Sadie married Herman S. Bassett on July 14, 1938. She was director of St. Joseph's Catholic choir and soloist while in Spokane....She was survived by her widower, a nephew, Lieutenant Commander Roy Knox, at Bremerton, and two step-daughters, Adelia Scott and Florence Bassett. She was preceded in death by her former husband, mother, step-father and her sister, Bessie B. Knox (September 22, 1942) who had lived with her in Harrington.
