- ARLINGTON - Robert Eugene Bessette , 86 , died June 19 , 2001 , at the Winchester Nursing Center. He was the husband of the late Loretta ( Horne ) Bessette.
He was born in West Springfield on July 6 , 1914 , the son of the late Archille and Mary Jane ( Clarke ) Bessette. Mr. Bessette graduated from Cathedral High School and Boston University in 1936 , majoring in accounting. He resided in Arlington for 60 years.
During and after college he played saxophone and clarinet in a swing band with his brother , Larry , on the old Fall River Line carrying passengers between Fall River and New York City.
He was employed by the Kelley Company of Arlington as an accountant. In the early 40s , he became a builder and built many homes in Arlington and surrounding towns. He also built apartment buildings in Cambridge and Arlington which he managed well into his 70s.
Mr. Bessette was on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Life Insurance Company. He was active in civic and church associations until his retirement.
He is survived by three daughters , Alice Harman and her husband Gerald of Kennebunk , Maine , Lorraine Corleto of Kennebunkport , Maine , and her husband Richard of Arlington and Kennebunkport , Maine , and Jane Battaglia and her husband Frank of Bedford ; a cousin , Ceil Bessette of Springfield ; 12 grandchildren ; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Robert E. Bessette Jr..
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday , June 22 , in St. Agnes Church , Arlington. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery , Arlington. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today , June 21 , at the Keefe Funeral Home , Arlington
