BASSETT, Clyde QUINCY, IL - Clyde Bassett, age 50 of 3416 Maine, Quincy, died
Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at 3:30 pm in Blessing Hospital following heart failure.
He was born June 11, 1954 in Billings, Montana, the son of Ralph and Rebecca
Freitag Bassett.
On July 9, 1978 he married Esther Marie Anania in Charleston, SC. He and his
wife, Esther, a jazz singer, shared 27 years of marriage. She survive
Clyde was in his 17th season as Quincy Symphony Orchestra Music Director and
his 30th year as a school string teacher and orchestra director. Originally
from Billings, Montana, Mr. Bassett began his career in 1976 in Charleston, SC
where he taught stringed instrument classes, directed the Charleston Youth
Symphony, and served as Principal Bass in the Charleston Symphony. In 1981, he
moved to Mt. Vernon, Illinois where he served as a string coordinator,
directed the high school orchestra and held the Principal Bass Chair in the
Paducah, Kentucky Symphony until 1989.
While in Mt. Vernon, he was active in the Rend Lake Civic Symphony, playing
viola and cello, and serving as Board President.
He held a Bachelor of Music Degree from Southern Illinois University, a Master
of Arts Degree in Music, and a Master of Science Degree, both from Western
Illinois University. Mr. Bassett attended Conducting Workshops in St. Louis,
Columbia, South Carolina, and at Illinois State University. From 1994 through
1996 he studied advanced orchestral conducting with Dr. William LaRue Jones,
Dr. Marvin Rabin and Dr. Jerc Lantz at the Orchestral Institute of America in
Minneapolis. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbu
Mr. Bassett directed three orchestras and taught over three hundred students
in the Quincy Public Schools where he was Director of Strings and Orchestra
Director from 1989 to the present. He was also active as a jazz bassist with
Ben Bumbry and the Messengers for 12 years, and played for his wife Esther who
is a jazz singer, as well. In fact, the two met and shared much of their life
together through their involvement in jazz ensembles.
Survivors include his son, Anthony Ralph Bassett of Las Vegas, NV; a sister,
Mary E. Wildner-Bassett and her husband Gunter Wildner of Tucson, AZ; t
nieces and one nephew, Rebecca, Lucas, and Corinna Wildner, Tucson, AZ. He was
preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be Monday, June 6, 2005, at 10:30 in the Hansen-Spear Funeral
Home followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 am in St. Peter's Catholic Church
with Rev. Roy Bauer and Rev. John Carberry officiating. Burial will be in St.
Peter's Catholic Cemetery, 30th and Broadway. Visitation will be Sunday, June
5 from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm with a Rosary Service at 1:45 pm at Hansen-Spear.
Memorials may be made to the family.
A memorial concert honoring Clyde's life will be held at a later date.
