- Amy lived in the same home for 27 years until she married, then moving
seven times in two years. She bought her first car in 1936, paying $700.00 for
it. Before she bought the car she had to drive a large mule, "Kate", hitched
to a two wheel cart, to be able to get to school, where she taught. The roads
were very bad. She received a salary of $60.00 a month.
Amy taught school for 22 years. Teaching four years at Six Mile
School, three years at Dye School, one year at McMurray and fourteen years at
Franklin.
One of the great thrills of Amy's life was when she went to her
Grandmother Hafford's in Rector, Arkansas, in 1918. There she experienced the
luxury of being able to take a bath in a real bath tub.
One of the great experiences in Amy's life was when she and a friend
got on a train and rode to Chicago, Illinois to the 1933 World's Fair. Being a
country girl and not knowing the ways of the city, she had not made any
reservations for a hotel, so by chance, with the help of the taxi driver, they
were able to find a room. She said she would remember the trip for the rest of
her life. She took her first plane ride in 1939 in Sherman, Texas. She said it
would be her last.
Amy quit smoking 4 Oct 1976. She said, "I did not realize that the air
was so fresh."
Leon and Amy built a new 3 bedroom, brick home in Gainesville, Texas,
moving into it Nov 1965.
One of the favorite hobbies of Amy and Leon is collecting jars and
Avon bottles.
Amy and Leon are very wonderful people. They are always there to lend
a hand and give a smile to brighten anyone's day.
