      Jeanette Champion Bassett
      February 24, 1962 ? May 29, 2026

Jeanette Marie (Champion) Bassett was born on February 24, 1962, in Anchorage, Alaska, at Elmendorf Air Force Base. She was the beloved granddaughter of Natividad (?Nat?) & Maria R. Villasana and John G. & Beatrice P. Champion, the cherished daughter of Adolph and Isabel Champion, and the devoted sister of Mark A. Champion, David R. Champion, and Elizabeth M. Bobo. Raised in a military family, Jeanette spent her childhood moving across the country ? from Alaska to Maryland and ultimately to the great state of Texas. She graduated from Parkland High School in El Paso, Texas, on May 29, 1980, with the distinction of being their band?s principal (first chair) flutist. Following graduation, she pursued her passion for language and culture as a foreign exchange student in Cartagena, Colombia, South America, where she became more fluent in Spanish. She later returned to El Paso to attend the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), earning her bachelor?s degree in education in May 1985, while also participating in a nursing home visitation ministry. In June 1985, Jeanette ? affectionately known as ?Jae? ? married her high school class valedictorian and college sweetheart, David V. Bassett (?Dae?). Together, as Christians, they built a life centered on faith and family. Jeanette began her career in education as a 4th-grade teacher at Immanuel Baptist Christian School (IBCS) in El Paso (1985?1987), where she was also able to apply her special-education training. She later taught K?4 at Texas Christian Academy (TCA) in Arlington, Texas (1992?1993). With the birth of her four children ? Deborah (1987), Jessica (1993), Abigai??l (1994), and Joshua (2003) ? Jeanette devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising and educating her family as a homeschooling mother for over 30 years. She was especially active in her daughters? ?History Club? and graciously extended her love of learning by tutoring children of friends and neighbors. After being married at Northgate Baptist Church in El Paso on June 7, 1985, Jeanette was a faithful member of several other Texas churches, mainly El Paso Bible Church, Grand Prairie Bible Church, Fielder Road Baptist Church (Arlington), High Pointe Baptist Church (Cedar Hill), New Hope Church (Duncanville), Destiny Church (Cedar Hill) ? where she volunteered as an office assistant ? and Believers? Fellowship Home Church (Glenn Heights). Her favorite Biblical books were I & II Kings, I & II Chronicles, Ezekiel, and, especially, the Book of Proverbs. Treasured verses of hers were Deuteronomy 6:5-7, I Peter 3:8-9a, and I Peter 4:8.A Few of Jeanette?s Other Favorites: Games: Backgammon, Boggle, Parcheesi, Skip-BO, Sorry, and Yahtzee Songs: ?Bless the Beasts and the Children? (The Carpenters), ?My Favorite Things? (Julie Andrews), ?Sunrise, Sunset? (Eddie Fisher), ?Waiting for a Girl Like You? (Foreigner ? Dae & Jae?s couple?s song!)TV/Movies: ?Charlie?s Angels,? ?The Bionic Woman,? ?MacGyver,? ?Star Trek: The Next Generation,? ?The Avengers,? ?A Country Wedding? Famous People/Characters: Lindsay Wagner (actress), Black Widow & Iron Man (Marvel Avengers)Jeanette found great joy in arts and crafts, particularly oil and acrylic painting, as well as crocheting. She enjoyed ?chain-phoning? friends and loved antique window shopping, visiting zoos, and collecting otter-themed keepsakes. She had a well-known fondness for sweet treats ? especially ice cream!! Above all, she had a deep commitment to prayer and to encouraging others. Jae had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome and at ease. She delighted in blessing others and was known for her joyful spirit, warm smile, and radiant personality. Her love, kindness, and faith left an impression on all who knew her. May the light of her love continue to shine in the hearts and memories of those she touched, to the glory of God. A private ?Celebration of Life? gathering will be held in Dallas, Texas, for immediate family and relatives, to remember, reminisce, and memorialize the Jeanette we all adored. Instead of sending flowers, tangible family support, your prayers, and/or your favorite memory of her would be appreciated.
