Marjorie Alice (Finch) Bassett

Marjorie Alice Finch Bassett, 99, Kokomo, died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday, November 24, 2011 at Jefferson Manor. She was born August 26, 1912, in North Liberty, the daughter of the late Ira Alfred and Alice (Pearce) Finch. She married Weston Hansel Bassett June 26, 1934, and he preceded her in death January 15, 2001.
Marge?s family moved to South Bend where she lived until graduation from South Bend High School in 1930. She then went to DePauw University where she met her future husband, Westy. While working toward a B.S. degree in Speech and English, she lived in the Kappa Kappa Gamma house where she participated in many sorority activities and served as Rush Chairman. Following graduation, she and Westy made their home in Kokomo.
Marge contributed to her community in many ways. Her memberships included Grace United Methodist Church, Symposium, (Past President), Thursday Study Club, (Past President), PEO-Chapter R, Tri Kappa, Greek Club, the YWCA,
Hospital Cheer Guild, and the Daughters of the American Revolution where she
held life memberships. She also belonged to the Kokomo Country Club. She had
many other interests including reading, knitting and antiquing. Mimi, as she was called by her grandchildren, was a world traveler having visited Hawaii, the Far East, Middle East, Europe, The Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and Africa. She traveled to New York City for many years taking in the new plays on Broadway. She and her husband split their time between their Kokomo home and their home on the Gulf of Mexico in North Redington Beach, Florida. Marge was the epitome of a lady, always expressing a loving concern for others. She continued to grow intellectually and was an inspiration to those around her. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature.
Survivors include four children, Barbara Bassett Lambert, (William), William Weston Bassett (Sharon), Kathryn Bassett Rebber, (Stanley) all of Kokomo, John Bassett, (Linda),of Wauconda, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Teri Lambert, Kathy Lambert Williams, (Daniel), Sara Bassett Sullivan, (David), Brenda Bassett Read (Scott), William Weston Bassett, Jr. (Nicole) Laura Bassett, (Ryan), and Derek John Bassett; nine great-grandchildren, Brock Malliet, John Sullivan, Grace Sullivan, Lillian Sullivan, Weston Williams, Peter Read, Sara Read, Audrey Bassett, and Gabriella Bassett.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor P. Mark Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd. and one hour before the service at the church.

Marge?s family wishes to express their love and gratitude to long time friend and caregiver, Edna Mast. They would also like to thank the staff at Jefferson Manor, especially Harvey, Joyce, and Val who lovingly cared for Marge.
