Weston H. "Westy" Bassett
Funeral services for Weston H. "Westy" Bassett, 90, of Kokomo, Ind.,
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Grace United Methodist Church in
Indiana.
Born Dec. 11, 1910, in Kokomo, to Will O. and Ethel Mae (nee Hansell)
Bassett, he died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Waterford Place Health Campus in
Kokomo. Burial will be in Kokomo Memorial Park.
Mr. Bassett was a 1929 graduate of Kokomo High School and a 1933
graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. A retired colonel in the
Army infantry, he had served during World War II and had been stationed in the
Aleutian Islands. Mr. Bassett was the owner-operator of Bassett Coal & Fuel
Co., co-owner of Star Coal & Supply Co., former president and CEO of B.
Hoadley Quarries, Inc., of Bloomington, Ind., and former owner of the S
Rocket Motel and developer of the Emerald Isles Condominium Project in North
Reddington Beach, Fla., in addition to being a retired farmer. He was a life
member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he taught the young adult
Sunday school class, served as chairman of the board of trustees and was past
president of the administrative board. He was also a past president and 58-
year member of the Kokomo Rotary Club; a member of the Kokomo Masonic Lodge,
the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Maurat Shrine; a form
member of the Kokomo Country Club; a member of the John Purdue Club, the
President's Club of Purdue University and the Purdue/Kokomo 400 Scholarship
Club; a life member of the Kokomo Elks Lodge; a member of the Kokomo Federal
Savings & Loan, where he served on the board of directors; a board member for
the McMahan-O'Connor Construction Co. in Rochester, Ind.; and a former board
member of Howard Community Hospital. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed bowling,
golfing and square dancing, and was an avid sports fan.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie A. Bassett, whom he married June 26,
1934, in South Bend, Ind.; sons, William (Sharon) Bassett of Kokomo and John
(Lynda) Bassett of Vernon Hills; daughters, Barbara (Bill) Lambert of Kokomo
and Kathryn (Stan) Rebber of Kokomo; grandchildren, Teri Lambert, Kathy
(Lambert) Williams, Sara (Bassett) Sullivan, Brenda (Bassett) Malliett,
William Bassett Jr., Laura Bassett and Derek Bassett; and three great-
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Murray Funeral Home,
414 W. Jefferson St., Kokomo, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services
Friday, at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Endowment
Fund for Scholarships.
