Private William Ernest Bassett, 32, who was charged at the court-martial yesterday with desertion, from February 27, 1943 to December 27, said he owned a business engaged solely in making tents and canvas equipment for the Army and when he had been called up in August, 1942, he had been given only one day?s notice to adjust his business. The business, which employed 40 people during his period in the Army was practically in chaos. After going a.w.l. and restoring the business he had postponed returning from time to time. The president of the court-martial said that, while not announcing its decision, the Court intended to recommend that Bassett?s story be investigated. If it was found that he was an essential technician engaged in defense contracts, consideration of his discharge from the Army and a remission of his sentence would be recommended.
