Earnest, the sixteen-year-old son of Marshall Bassett, of Marion township, had both bones of the right leg broken below the knee this morning by being thrown from a colt he was riding. Dr. T.C. Kennedy attended his wants.

Prominent Young Couple Were Married Wednesday Evening
At the home of the bride?s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bass, in West Broadway Wednesday evening occurred the wedding of Miss Grace Bass and Mr. Ernest Bassett.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H.O. Pritchard in the presence of the immediate relatives of the contracting parties and a friends. As the bridal party descended the stairs into the parlors, Miss Sadie King, of Indianapolis, a friend of the bride, played very touchingly on the piano, ?The Bridal Chorus?. While the ceremony was performed ?Meditation? was softly rendered.
After congratulations, a bountiful wedding supper was served. The young couple will be at home after a few days at 231 West Franklin Street.
Mr. Bassett is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bassett, of Marion township, and is the genial and efficient bookkeeper at the S. P. Stroup Lumber yard.
Mrs. Bassett as stated above is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bass and is very popular among a large circle of friends, all of whom join in wishing the happy couple a long and prosperous wedded life.
Family Notes:
Ernest taught school in the city of Shelbyville, Indiana from 1904 to
1905. He then worked for Karmire Lumber company as a bookkeeper from 19
until after his marriage in 1906. Ernest and Grace moved to the old William
Bass farm on State Road 9 sometime between April of 1906 and May of 1908. His
family resided there until August of 1924 when he relocated to Kokomo,
Indiana.
When Ernest and his family first moved to Kokomo, they moved into a
house at 415 W. Jefferson Street. He then built a new house at 1017 N.
Courtland in 1926. Upon retiring in 1953, Ernest and Grace moved to a n
house on 1715 W. Sycamore Street. That house was sold in 1973 for $24,000.
Upon arriving in Kokomo, Ernest went to work for his brother W.
Bassett at his coal yard. He worked there four years as a bookkeeper. He then
decided to start out on his own with his own coal yard. He purchased two acres
of land and a shop in 1929 for $11,000 and formed the Ernest Bassett Co
Company. He sold the coal yard to General Motors in 1954 for $54,000 and
retired.
Ernest bought his first and only tractor in 1921 from the county
highway department in Shelby County. They were working on grading the road,
and when they were finished, he purchased the tractor from them. It w
General Ordinance Tractor with friction drive. He also used between 15 and 20
horses to farm with. Ernest bought his first car in 1916. It was a 1916 Ford
Model T. In 1920 he purchased a new Overland 4 door touring car. In 1924, he
bought another new Overland touring car. In 1926, he bought the first Pontiac
sold in Howard County, Indiana from Pearcy Automobile Sales of Kokomo.
Starting in 1929, he traded cars every year and got a new car as long as he
owned the coal yard.
Ernest lost his balance at home and broke his back in 1962. He spent 3
1/2 years in bed before he died in 1965. Ernest and Grace are both buried in
Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo, Indiana.
Ernest farmed 220 acres while he lived on St. Road 9. There was a gas
well on the south end of the farm that provided free gas for lights and heat
in the farm house, one of the few houses in this neighborhood that had gas.
The three boys and a farm hand helped work the farm. They grew mostly corn and
winter wheat. They had about a dozen milk cows and several dozen hogs. They
also raised chickens and hens for eggs and chicken. They used between 15
and 20 horses to help out on the farm.

Ernest Bassett, Former Coal Co. Owner, Dies
Ernest Bassett, 82, 1715 W. Sycamore St., owner of the former Ernest
Bassett Coal Co., died early Friday morning after an extended illnes
Born Jan. 20, 1883, in Shelby County, he was the son of Marshall and
Nora (Israel) Bassett.
He attended school in Shelby County and had also taught school there.
Coming to Kokomo in 1924, he worked for the W.O. Bassett Fuel Co. for
several years then started the Ernest Bassett Coal Co., which he operated for
25 years. The company was located on South Home Avenue near the Delco Radio
Division.
On Feb. 15, 1905, in Shelbyville he was married to Grace Bass, who
survives. The couple would have observed their 60th wedding anniversary in
February.
A member of St. Luke's EUB Church, he had served the church as Sunday
School superintendent and had taught a Sunday School class for 30 years. The
class was later named in his honor. He had also served in several other
capacities at the church.
He was a member of Howard Lodge No. 93 F and AM and the Scottish Rite
of Indianapolis.
Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Cosand
and Mrs. Robert (Mary Ellen) Cooley, both of Kokomo; three sons, William of
Shelbyville; Harold of Wabash, and Ralph of Marion; one brother W.O. Bassett,
Phoenix, Ariz; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Jacobs Funeral Home with
the Rev. Ivan R. Woods assisted by the Rev. DeWayne Bontrager officiating.
Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday.
LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ERNEST BASSETT
I, Ernest Bassett, being of sound mind and memory and being desirous
of making a disposition of all of my property, both real and personal in my
name at the time of my death, do make this my Last Will and Testament, hereby
revoking any and all wills by me heretofore made.
ITEM ONE
I will and direct that any and all of my just legal debts of every kind and
character that may exist, including doctor bills and funeral expenses, be paid
first by my Executor, hereinafter named, as soon as is practicable after my
death.
ITEM TWO
I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Grace Bassett, all of the household
goods and furnishings, together with the family automobile that I may own at
the time of my death, for her own use and benefit or to dispose of it as she
desires.
ITEM THREE
I give and bequeath to the St. Luke's Evangelical United Brethren Churc
Kokomo, Indiana, the sum of Four Thousand ($4,000.00) Dollars. The Board of
Trustees to administer said funds.
ITEM FOUR
(a) After all of my just legal debts of every kind and character have been
paid, including expenses of last sickness, funeral expenses and costs of
administration, and after Item Two and Item Three of this my Last Will and
Testament have been fully paid and complied with, I give and bequeath to by
beloved children, William M. Bassett, Harold I. Bassett, Helen Laverne Cosand,
Ralph J. Bassett and Mary Ellen Cooley, all the remainder of my personal
property of every kind, character and description, whatsoever the same may be
or wherever situated, for their own use and benefit or to dispose of it as
they desire. Said named children shall share and share alike in the remainder
of my personal property.
(b) I further will and direct that in the event any one or more of my said
children should predecease me, then and in that event I order and direct that
the interest of each respective deceased child shall then go to the surviving
spouse and children of said deceased child, the said surviving spouse a
children to take the interest willed to my deceased child as provided under
the general rules of descent as the Probate Code of the State of Indiana
provides of a person dying intestate.
ITEM FIVE
(a) I will and devise all of my real estate which I own or have an interest in
at the time of my death, which shall include the home where we reside, being
located at 1715 West Sycamore Street, Kokomo, Indiana and legally described as
Part of Lot Nine of the Northeast Quarter of Section Thirty-five, Township
Twenty-four, Range Three, containing .25 acres in the City of Kokomo, Howard
County, Indiana; the apartment building which I own at the northwest corner of
Phillip and Sycamore Street, Kokomo, Indiana and legally described as Lots
Fifty-one, Fifty-two and Lots Twenty-seven and Twenty-eight except 57.4 feet
off the north end of Lots Twenty-seven and Twenty-eight is Rosenthal's First
Addition to the City of Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana; and my farm consisting
of one hundred ten acres located and situated in Lagro Township, Wabash
County, Indiana and any and all other real estate that I may own or have an
interest in at the time of my death, to my beloved wife, Grace Bassett, for
and during her natural lifetime. Upon the death of Grace Bassett, my beloved
wife, the fee simple title of all of said real estate which I may own or have
an interest in at the time of my death, shall go to my beloved children,
William M. Bassett, Harold I. Bassett, Helen Laverne Cosand, Ralph J. Bassett
and Mary Ellen Cooley, equally, share and share alike, as tenants in common.
(b) I further will and direct that in the event any one or more of my said
children in whom I have vested the fee simple title to my real estate, subject
to the life estate of my wife, as hereinabove set out, should predecease me,
then and in that event I order and direct that the interest of each respective
deceased child shall then go and be vested in the surviving spouse and the
children of said deceased child. The surviving spouse and children to take the
interest heretofore willed to my deceased child as provided under the general
rules of descent as the Probate Code of the State of Indiana provides of a
person dying intestate.
ITEM SIX
I hereby nominate and appoint William M. Bassett, Shelbyville, Indiana, as
Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and request that his bond be only
in a nominal amount to comply with the Probate Code as to protection of
creditors.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Ernest Bassett, have hereunto set my hand and seal this

Bassett Estate Value Set At $101,933.16
A value of $101,933.16 has been placed on the estate of Ernest Bassett, former Kokomo coal company owner, who died Jan. 22 at the age of 82.
Mr. Bassett?s worth, as listed in a Howard Circuit Court inventory, included $41,000 in real estate and $60,933.16 in personal property.
The personal property included savings, an investment certificate and contracts due him on real estate.
