Ralph S. Bassett - Electircal Engineer
Ralph Salvage Bassett, 82, a retired electrical engineer who had worked at Vitro Laboratories in Silver Spring and for the Army Signal Corps, died of a cerebral aneurysm Oct. 25 at Rockingham memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
Mr. Bassett was born in Chicago and attended the University of Chicago. He worked for the Army Signal Corps in Chicago before moving to the Washington area in 1941.
He was a civilian employee of the Army Signal Corps during World War II. After war he taught at Capital Radio Engineering Institute here until 1951, when he began working at Vitro Laboratories. He retired from Vitro in 1973.
In 1973 he moved from Silver Spring to Middletown, Va. He moved from there to Harrisonburg in August of 1989.
His first wife, Vernal Walston Bassett, died in 1960. Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Amy Stauffer Bassett of Harrisonburg, and their son, Daniel Ralph Bassett of Port Republic, Va.; four children by his first marriage, Linda Bassett Schaye of Chicago, David W. Bassett of Lagunitas, Calif., James Walter Bassett of Winchesther, Va., and Everett John Bassett of Tempe, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

Ralph Salvage Bassett, 82, of 1724 Park Road, Apt. A, in Harrisonburg, died at 9:35 Thursday evening at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
A son of the late Walter Lindley Bassett and Minnie Salvage Bassett, he was born on June 12, 1908, in Chicago where he lived his early life. he later moved to Rolling Praire, Indiana, prior to moving to Orlando, Florida, where he graduated from high school. He returned to Chicago where he studied electrical engineering at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Bassett then served at the Pentagon as a civilian with the Army Signal Corps in World War II, prior to teaching at Capital Radio Engineering Institute in Washington, D.C. He later was employed at Vitro Laboratories of Automation Industries of Silver Spring for 22 years before retiring in 1973.
Mr. Bassett was active in the Boy Scouts, P.T.A. and the Shenandoah Area Agency for Aging. He was a member of the Otterbern United Methodist Church. He was active in church affairs, serving as Trustee and on administrative committees in the Methodist church he attended.
Mr. Bassett was twice married. His first wife, Mrs. Vernal Walston Bassett, preceded him in death in 1960. On January 21, 1961, he married the former Amy Stauffer, who survives.
Also surviving are five children, Linda Bassett Schaye of Chicago, Illinois, David Walston Bassett of Lagunitas, California, James Walter Bassett of WInchester, Everett John Bassett of Tempe, Arizona, and Daniel Ralph Bassett of Port Republic; and six grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
His body will be cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel in Harrisonburg. Memorial services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock from Otterbern United Methodist Church. The Rev. Raymond Edmonds will conduct the service.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Friends may also call at the residence.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Otterbern United Methodist Church or the Stephens City United Methodist Church in his memory.
