ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Wayne Bassett, 85, Alexandria, died Aug. 18, 2010, at the
Veterans Administration Northern Indiana Health Care System, Marion, after an
extended illness.
He was born April 30, 1925, in Alexandria, the son of Roscoe O. Bassett and
Grace (Lee) Bassett, and was a lifetime resident.
Wayne was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1943. He served with
the United States Marines from 1943-1946 during World War II. Upon returning,
he began working in the tool room at Aladdin Industries, formerly of
Alexandria. He worked and became plant manager at Triangle Tool and Die,
formerly of Elwood, from 1952-1964. In 1966, he founded Bassett Tool and Die
in Alexandria. After selling the local business, his love of metal engineering
led him to work at R & R Engineering in Summitville, retiring in 200
He was a former member of the Alexandria Elks Lodge and the Alexandria Eagles
Lodge. He and his wife have been longtime supporters of Alexandria Tiger
Athletics and Wayne was a Cincinnati Reds fan.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Gosnell) Bassett, whom he married July
12, 1943; son, Dennis (Susan) Bassett of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren,
Michelle Wells of Elwood, Valerie Bassett of Carmel, Brett (Kim) Cri
Cicero, Richard (Tracey) Bassett of Fishers, and Marcy (Tom) Blee of Fo
Wayne; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherry Crist in 1989;
brothers, LeRoy Bassett and Earl Bassett-1996; sister, Helen Peters-2010; and
two nephews, Terry Peters-1981, and Bob Bassett-2009.
Services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N.
Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Jerry Young officiating. Interment will
be in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, with military honors by Elwood Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 1552.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
