ALEXANDRIA – Helen M. (Bassett) Peters, 92, of Alexandria, died Jan. 28, 2010,
at Community Northview Care Center in Anderson, following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Alexandria, to Roscoe O. and Grace (Lee)
Bassett, and resided in Alexandria her entire life.
Helen was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1934. She was the
oldest living member of the Alexandria Church of God. She served on numerous
church boards and Missionary Society, taught Sunday School for several years
and was elected to a national office on the Church of God Board of Christian
Education. She was named woman of the year in 1984 at her church. She h
worked for Madison County Abstract and Title Company in Anderson in her
younger days. More recently she had worked at the former Leewin Floral Company
in Alexandria for 43 years. When her late husband, Charles, served on t
Alexandria Fire Department, Helen was active in the Fire Department Auxiliary.
Helen loved to crochet and knit. She made hundreds of lap blankets for nursing
home residents. She also made infant blankets that were sent to American
Indian missions. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Lemon, Alexandria;
grandchildren, Michael Lemon, Alexandria, Erin (Chris) Hubbard, Brownsburg,
Scott (Jenny) Peters, Geneva, and Craig Peters, Bellingham, Wash.; great-
grandchildren, Wesley Timmons and Bennett Hubbard; her brother, Wayne
(Phyllis) Bassett, Alexandria; former daughter-in-law, Neva Peters (Amo
Schwartz, Geneva; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Charles
Peters, who died in 1994; her son, Terry Peters, in 1981; brothers, Earl
Bassett and LeRoy Bassett; and son-in-law, Gene Lemon, in 2006.
A Service of Home Going will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, in
the Alexandria Church of God, 302 N. West St., Alexandria, officiated by
Pastor Tom Schuurman.
Interment will follow at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Noffze Funeral Home, 501 N.
Harrison St. Alexandria and/or after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made, through the funeral home, to Alexandria
Church of God. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and
appreciation to Dr. Kelly Chambers, Nurse Practitioner Deb Garner and t
staff at Community Northview Care Center, Anderson.
