Eugene Bassett
Eugene V. D. Bassett, 51, 215 S. Purdurn St., died suddenly of a heart
attack about 10 a.m. Saturday, while waiting in his car for the light to
change at the intersection of Union and Taylor Streets.
He had been under the care of a physician for some time for a heart
ailment, and was on his way home after consultation with the docto
Mrs. Bassett was with her husband and realized that something w
seriously wrong when he slumped in his seat. She left the car and summoned
aid, but Mr. Bassett was dead when first aid and a physician arrive
The deceased was born April 11, 1903, in Alexandria, son of Arthur and
Minnie Bassett. He had lived in Kokomo 39 years.
He drove a taxi for 15 years, was employed at the Globe American Corp.
10 years and more recently was employed in the grinding department of t
Haynes Stellite. He also operated a small repair shop adjacent to his home.
Bassett served in the U.S. Navy from 1919-1921.
He is survived by the widow, Dorothy (Fowler) Bassett; one daughter,
Eugenia Wines, Kokomo; three grandchildren; two brothers, Russell of Allen,
Mich., and Kenneth, who is employed at The Kokomo Tribune; three sisters, Mrs.
Madge Ellis and Mrs. Madeline Miller, both of Kokomo; Mrs. Delcenia Miller,
Oshkosh, Wis.; two aunts, Mrs. Belle Sanders, Kokomo, and Mrs. Belle
Richardson, living in Texas, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Ellers Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Monday until
9 a.m. Tuesday, at which time the body will be taken to the First Bapti
Church to lie in state until the funeral at 10 a.m. The Rev. J. M. Newsom will
officiate and burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery.
