Joe Bassett Fund Started at Whitman
Walla Walla - A Joe Bassett Memorial Fund has been established at Whitman College for Mr. Bassett, formerly of Okanogan and Walla Walla, who died June 7 in a fall on Callahan Mountain near his home in Roseburg, Oregon.
Mr. Bassett, who managed production at the Roseburg Lumber Company flakeboard plant, was graduated in 1948 from Whitman, also the college of his wife and parents. His grandfather, the late state senator, J.D. Bassett of Spokane, was an overseer.
Mr. Bassett's aunt is Grace C. Jones, interior decorator of Spokane.
Contributions may be sent to the Fund, care of R.R. Reid, treasurer, Whitman College, Walla Walla.
Bassett had planned to camp overnight on the mountain. He was killed when the motorbike he was riding went off a ridge and fell 300 feet. The body was discovered by Bassett's son, Joe, shortly after sunrise Saturday, June 9, and recovered by a volunteer rescue team.
Surviving are the widow, Betty, a daughter, Judy, and son, Joe, of Roseburg, Oregon, and sister, Miss Mary Grace Bassett, Washington, D.C.
