Alton Bassett
Alton Lane Bassett, age 81, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, February 28th, 2007 at the Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. Mr. Bassett was born in Thomaston, Georgia October 9th, 1925, the son of a farmer. He moved to Atlanta at the age of seventeen where he worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company. Until he was drafted into the Infantry at age eighteen on December 25th, 1943. Following basic training, he was then sent to Sicily, then Italy. He was in Rome on "D" Day. Then he traveled on a troop ship for forty four days to Okinawa where he remained until VJ Day. Ten days after the bomb was dropped he walked with his unit through Hiroshima. He remained in Japan until 1946. After returning to the states he was discharged and return to Atlanta. For his excellence in the military, he was awarded two bronze stars. In 1947 he made his home in Roswell, GA. After graduating from the Atlanta Automotive Trade Institution, he made his career as an auto body technician with Ford dealers for forty years. In 1951, he joined the First Baptist Church of Roswell where he remained a member. In 1953, he married the former Bobbe Ruth Hunt of Roswell. They made their home in Roswell for fifty two years. Since 1990, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett have lived part-time at the mountain home in Ellijay, Georgia where he loved to work in his garden and grow flowers. He was a member of the Walnut Mountain Garden Club. Additional survivors are son, David Bassett, sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Jim Carmickle, sisters-in-law, Gloria Bassett and Ernestine Bassett, many nieces and nephews. And also grandboxers Emily and Molly. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Bassett, parents, Webster J. and Evie Manley Bassett, siblings Aubrie, Carlton, Perry Bassett, Linnie Abner, and Irene Caldwell. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Sunday March 4th 2007 from the Greenlawn Cemetery in Roswell, Georgia. Speaker Dan Roberts will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Southeast Regional Stroke Center at Medical Center Plaza, 979 East 3rd Street, Suite 1202, Chattanooga, TN; 37403.
