      Obituary
      Ald. Thomas Ernest Bassett

The death of Ald. Thomas Ernest Bassett, which took place at about noon on Thursday last at a private hospital in Chatswood, although not altogether unexpected, caused quite a shock to his legion of friends throughout the west. The late Mr. Bassett, who was born in the Madgee district 56 years ago, came to Wellington about 22 years ago, and opened up in business as tobacconist and billiard saloon which premises he occupied up to the time he went away from here about five weeks ago.
Prior to that time none of his friends thought that there was anything wrong with him, as he looked a fresh and healthy man. However, his complaint struck him very quickly and he was given three months leave of absence from the Municipal Council. That was really the first intimation that there was anything seriously wrong with him. He left Wellington and saw a specialist, and then entered a private hospital at North Sydney. From the time of his entry it was found that it was a hopeless case, and he soon grew week from the malady he was suffering from, and which was sapping his strength away each day, and the bews that was received in Wellington was not at all encouraging. His family were summoned to his bedside, and all were present when death took place at the hour stated, thus ending the suffering which he had gone through for the past few weeks.
Tom, as we was familiarly known to his legion of friends in the West, for he had visited every nook and corner of it, had followed the occupation of bookmaker, and he fielded on every course in the west, where he was held in the highest regard for his honesty and integrity. His cheerful disposition and cheery smile made him a great favorite in his calling as a bookmaker. He not only took a keen interest in racing, but in all kinds of outdoor sport he was prominent.
For years he closely associated himself with cricket, and was responsible for getting together various teams which took part in the competitions, often filling a vacant place himself in the team if anyone was absent. It was the same with League football. In the old days when the games were played on the old Junction Park he took a very keen interest in the code and was always ready to assist the game in any way he could. He was also closely associated with the Wellington Bowling Club, of which he has been a member for many years. He was always regarded as a good player, and took part in many of the A grade pennant games for a number of years. The flag at the Club House was flow at half-mast when the news of his death was received here.
He was also a good public spirited man, ever ready to help the xxx along whenever he had the opportunity. At the last general election of aldermen he was one of the only batch to gain the favour of the ratepayers, and during his stay in the Council he was always fearless yet outspoken in his remarks, his idea being to do the best for the whole of the ratepayers,, and it was through his energies? that the present traffic and parking regulations were enforced in this town.
By the death of Mr. Bassett the town has lost a fine citizen and his wife and children a devoted husband and father, and the sympathy of all will go out to them in their great sorrow.
He was twice married, the children by his first wife being Ella (Mrs. Clive Rotton), Wellington, Essie (Mrs. Leeg) Sydney, Misses Mavis and Joyce, both of Wellington, Vivian (Tom), William and Neville, all of Wellington, his second wife survives him, together with a three year old son Paul.
A Requiem Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Delours Church, Chatswood, on Friday morning, and later on the body was laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the Southern Suburbs Cemetery.
