VERNA HOLLEY Verna M. Holley, a resident of southern Nevada for 62 years, left our presence to walk with the Lord and husband, Lewis, March 06, 2011. She was 85 years old. Our beloved mother, was born in Cassoday, Kan., Aug. 10, 1925, to Jerry and Della Bassett. During World War II, she worked in airplane construction and during the 1950's and 1960's as a Keno writer in the gaming industry. The 1970's found mom attending college to become a registered nurse. Her nursing career took her to various Las Vegas hospitals, also overseas to ARAMCO Oil Company in Saudi Arabia. Mom or "Bernie," as she liked to be called, continued her career and education until Alzheimer's Disease overcame her in the late 1990's. She spent her remaining years with family, while fighting the disease, as best she could. Mom enjoyed listening to Big Band and classical music. She liked to coupon clip and read financial articles, but most of all she liked spending time with her grandchildren. Mom was preceded in death by her devoted husband and partner of 59 years, Lewis E. Holley. Bernie is survived by her sister, Marge Burkleo; sons, Stephen Holley, Michael Holley and William Holley; and six grandchildren, Alexander Holley, Ryan Holley, Michelle Holley, Sara Holley, Mackenzie Holley and Spencer Holley. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to La Paloma Funeral Services. No services are planned.
